The £49.15 cost to deal with rats and mice is to be scrapped for 12 months by North Lanarkshire Council.
Labour group members announced they will propose the change in policy at a virtual council meeting later this month. It follows a number of communities reporting increasing issues with rodents, with opposition members having highlighted the issue last year and calling it a “major environmental issue”.
The initiative will scrap the £49.15 cost of pest control calls required at residents’ homes and is expected to cost £200,000, which will be met from the local authority’s coronavirus recovery fund.
Council leader Jim Logue said: “Rat and mouse sightings have become more common during COVID-19 for a variety of reasons and for some communities is the number one issue they currently face.”
