Highly trained dogs that can sniff out bed bugs formed part of a demonstration at last week’s PPC Live show.

At the event in Harrogate, BDL Canine’s Bed Bug Detection team, Brian Leith and Benji showcased their skills.

The team will be one of several demonstrations, seminars and forums which will highlight the latest innovations in the pest control industry, alongside more than 50 exhibitors.

Cimex Store works with trainers of canine bed bug detection teams. Company Director and entomologist, Dr Richard Naylor said: “Bed bugs aggregate, relying on pheromones to find each other.

“Dogs are able to detect these unusual chemical signals and can be trained to sniff them out.

“Detection dogs are particularly useful in situations where the bedbugs have access to inaccessible voids, such as in the bed base or behind the headboard. Dogs can sniff out these areas very quickly and with minimal disturbance.”

Dr Naylor added: “In apartment buildings, dogs can be used to determine the spread of an infestation and later confirm treatment success.

“Bed Bug Foundation CIC certifies bed bug scent detection dog teams across Western Europe.

“BBF-K9.org is a directory of scent detection dog teams that have passed the annual certification, making it easy for pest managers to find quality bed bug detection services in their area.”

Mr Leith and detection dog Benji from BDL Canine gave a demonstration at PPC Live.
